  • NOTE:

  • AT THE TIME OF CONTRACTING
    • Room specifications: Ideally, you want a room that is rather large. For a room of 18, the minimum space is 30' x 30', at least. Larger is better. Think of each person working on a 30"x40" canvas, with enough room for four of those canvases in the center of the room, with each person's canvas around those four, as one large painting, with enough room for paints, and for walking between and around the paintings. That should help you decide on the size of the room.
  • AT LEAST 4 WEEKS BEFORE
    • Order enough canvases for paintings (see "artist materials: canvases" below). Depending on the size of the room, you may choose either 16"x16" or 30"x40" depending on what space and time is available for paintings to dry.
    • Rent a u-haul truck if needed(see "artist materials: canvases" below).
    • Order boxes, either large mirror boxes or pizza boxes, depending on the space and time available for drying (see "artist materials: canvases" below).

      • Yes, there is enough space for each participant to work on a 30x40 canvas.
        • Yes, I can let paintings dry in a location on the facility?
          • Yes, and there is enough space for 4"x30"x48" boxes stacked one on top of the other, enough for all the participants?
            • Then, order 1-3/4"x30"x40" UNPRIMED canvas (approx. $9 ea.) and 1-4"x36"x48" large mirror box (apprxo. $8 ea.) for each individual, and 4 additional 30x40 UNPRIMED canvases and 4 large mirror boxes for each painting.
          • No, there isn't enough space, but since it is a multi-week session, boxes could be stored in a u-haul on the premise.
            •     Call your local u-haul and make arrangements to rent the u-haul for the needed duration.
          • No, it isn't a multi-week session and you can't store paintings on the premise, so there is only enough space for smaller paintings, 16"x16" in pizza boxes.
            • Then, order 1-3/4"x16"x16" UNPRIMED canvas and 1-2"x16"x16" pizza box for each individual, and 4 additional 3/4"x16"x16" canvas and 4-2"x16"x16" pizza box for each painting.
      • No, not enough space for 3/4"x30"x40", only 3/4"x16"x16".
        • Then, order 1-3/4"x16"x16" UNPRIMED canvas and 1-2"x16"x16" pizza box for each individual, and 4 additional 3/4"x16"x16" canvas (approx. $3.85 ea.) and 4-2"x16"x16" pizza box for each painting (packages of 50 fo4 $42 + shipping)
        • Order canvases from: Wholesale Arts and Frames, 818-786-2814
        • Order pizza boxes from Paper Mart
        • Artist materials: paints
          • Purchase up to 8 cans of very bright colors, high gloss, indoor acrylic paint, including black (averages about $27/gal). In addition, about three weeks before the event, I purchase "oops" paint at Lowe's and Home Depot. These are 1 gallon cans of paint that the painting department has for those customers who returned paints. They cost about $5 each. But, choose only the ones that give you some variety of colors.
          • Get a few gallons of white, for up to 18 participants.
          • Get enough stir sticks for participants to use to mix paints.
          • Purchase a 100 pack of latex gloves (at Lowes or Home Depot)
          • Purchase enough large plastic cups, usually in red, blue, and yellow for participants to pour paint into.
          • Purchase 2-3 cases of bottled water, and purchase house paint pigment in quantities of about 6 oz/color. In each bottled water, put up to 6 tablespoons of pigment (you don't need to measure) in each bottle.
          • Purchase enough plastic ketchup squeeze bottles to have at least one per color of paint, the cheapest you can find. Restaurant supply stores have them. If need be, go to Lowes or Home Depot and get tips in the electrical department to cap each plastic tube.
          • Purchase enough rolls of paper towels, and if possible, bring enough old newspaper for participants to use, too.
          • Email Mark to use his squeegees that he has available

  • Purchase and/or order enough rice paper, so that each person has 2-3 sheets that are about 18"x24". Rice paper sheets come in large sizes, available at local artist supply stores. Make sure that you pickup the thinner rice paper called "shuen."
  • Make arrangement with Mark to rent materials for the painting and the calligraphy.
  • AT LEAST 2 WEEKS BEFORE
    • Print and assemble notebooks (see attachment at the bottom of this page)
      • Option 1: Print and assemble with only the pages that are needed for the first session and insert in a notebook, then handout the relevant additional pages for each subsequent session at the beginning of each session. This ensures that participants don't jump ahead and figure out where the course is going, which can distract them from their participation in the current session.
      • Option 2: Assemble with all the pages in the notebook.
    • Purchase paints (see "artist materials: paints" below) for the Practice of Unfolding
    • Purchase supplies for the Practice of Recognizing (either 2 day or 5 half-day sessions)
  • AT LEAST 1 WEEK BEFORE
  • Print and assemble handouts (ACTION: CREATE HANDOUT)
  • Purchase for the 8 hour design (the practice of Recognizing, Suspending, and Unfolding) or the Practice of Unfolding (either 2 day or 5 half-day sessions):
    • Enough duct tape based on the size of the room (see "Set-up room" directions below)
    • Enough rolls of plastic sheeting to cover the entire floor and hallways, if necessary (see "Set-up room" directions below), 6ml, 10'x30'
    • Enough rolls of blue masking tape (see "Set-up room" directions below)
      • Purchase for the Practice of Suspending (either 2 or 5 half-day session:
        • 3x5 notecards, at least 11/participant, and about 10-20 extra/team for the group activity
      • For the Practice of Enacting, rent and watch the movie "Touch the Top of the World," and review the notes that correspond to the various clips.
    • THE DAY BEFORE
      • Pack projector
      • Pack all artist materials, canvases and paints
      • For the Practice of Enacting:
      • Get extra pens, pencils, and blank sheets of paper, only a few sheets/person are needed.
    • THE MORNING OF
      • Set-up projector
        • Connect computer to projector
        • Queue beginning of video clip on computer
        • Turn off projector, or put cap on lens, so that you can remove when it's appropriate to show video clip
        • Prepare room for performance
        • For 90 minute session only and for the Practice of Embodying session: 
          • Layout the wardrobe and calligraphy materials in a separate area of the room, in a place where everyone will be able to see.
          • Put plastic down on the floor and around the tables
          • Set-up calligraphy materials for each person, and establish a larger area for group paintings with up to 5 or more individuals.
          • Get enough buckets of fresh water and empty buckets for participants to wash their brushes out and get clean water for 2-3 paintings
          For the Practice of Suspending, 2 or 5 half-day sessions:
          • Queue music, "Todd's Decision: End Credits" from the movie soundtrack, Lions for Lambs, so that it is at the beginning and ready to go
        • For the Practice of Enacting, 2 or 5 half-day sessions:
          • Set-up projector, if needed
          • Connect computer to projector
          • Queue the first video clip on your computer to time marker 82:46 on the video, "Touch the Top of the World". Mark also has an edited version that he uses, if you prefer.
          • Turn off projector, or put cap on lens, so that you can remove when it's appropriate to show video clip
        Set-up room 
        • For the Opening:
          •  Black out entire room with black vinyl on windows around seams of doors to create the environment of a blind cafe.
          • If possible, tables for four arranged like a cafe with enough space between them for the performance.
          • Layout the wardrobe and calligraphy materials in a separate area of the room, in a place where everyone will be able to see.
        • For the Practice of Unfolding:
          • This session has the most extensive set-up. Basically, you turn a room in to an artist's studio, so that any paint does not damage the floors and walls.
          • Materials to prepare the room:
            • If your room is carpeted and depending on the size of the room, purchase enough 6 ml thick plastic to cover the entire room, with some overlap between sheets of plastic. The plastic that I used was 10' wide and 30' long, available at Lowes or Home Depot.
            • Get enough rolls of duct (55 yd. contractor duct tape) tape to seal the edges of the plastic on both sides. Overlap the edges about 8" and use duct tape to seal them together. Then turn over the two sheets, and duct tape the edge on the other side. THIS IS IMPORTANT to ensure that if there is any leakage on one side that it has the chance of being caught on the other side without leaking on to the carpet.
            • Get enough rolls of blue masking tape to tape the edges of the plastic on the walls, to protect about 12-18" up along side of the walls.
        • For the Practice of Embodying:
          • Ideally there are rectangular tables for 2-3/table.
          • Each table should be facing in the same direction, in a u-shape, or even facing each other, depending on the number of participants.
          • Plastic, if possible, should be placed in walking areas and especially to the sink so that any dripping ink does not damage carpets or floors.
          • Set-up the calligraphy materials on various tables, each element in a separate area for participants to pick up what they need (bamboo scroll with brushes, ink, large plate, small plate, plastic tub, rocks, paper).
